A trek to the verdant midlands of Nepal and the glaciers at the head of the Langtang
Valley is an experience of the fragile beauty of this mountain region, now protected
as part of Langtang National Park, and an insight into the lifestyle and culture
of the people and the influenced by Hinduism and Buddhism.
Our
trek takes us through pleasant rhododendron and larch forests to Langtang, a high
Himalayan valley. In the upper reaches of the valley, we find impressive views
of the icy brow of Langtang Lirung (23,769') dominating the horizon. We continue
higher past the Kyangjin monastery at 12,300 feet, and camp near summer pasturing
settlements for a day's excursion to see Langtang's glacier and icefall and the
spectacular peaks surrounding it.
Descending through rhododendron and
juniper forests once again, past water driven prayer wheels and waterfalls, and
climb to alpine terrain on a pilgrim's trail to the Gosainkund lakes. Largely
uninhabited most of the year, Gosainkund draws as many as 50,000 Hindu pilgrims
during the full moon in August. We then take a different route to Helambu and
descend along ridge trails to Kathmandu.
