Chilela Nature Trek

Day - 1 Arrive Paro International Airport
During the journey to Paro, one will experience breath taking view of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Chomolhari and Mount Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be received by representatives of our tour operator, who will escort you to the hotel where arrangements have been made for the night.

Day - 2 Paro - Sightseeing /Thimphu
Visit the National Museum ( Ta-Dzong ). This was actually the Watch tower of the Paro Rinchen Pong Dzong. It was converted to the National Museum in 1968.

Visit the Rinchen Pong Dzong. This massive fortress is located on a hill top above the Pachu(Paro river) in the Paro valley. It houses the District Administration office and the District Monk Body. It was built in 1645 AD.

Lunch at the Hotel.

Visit the Drugyal Dzong which is located 15 km away from the Paro town. The name Drugyal means " Victorious ". The Dzong was built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel the founder of Bhutan in 1650 AD to commemorate his victory over the Tibetan army and it formed one of the many chains of defensive fortresses against the Tibetan invasions. The Dzong was burnt down by accident in 1950. It is presently under renovation.

On the way back, visit the Kyichu Monastery. This Monastery was built in 659 AD by King Songtsen Gampo of Tibet, as one of the 108 such Monasteries which he built in various places to spread Buddhism. It is considered one of the holiest places in Bhutan as it marks the advent of Buddhism in the country. Kyichu Monastery is located between Drugyal Dzong and Paro town.

Evening: Reception by tours operator with local musicians.

Day - 3 Begin the trek. Paro - Chonana
Start the trek from Olathang 1.5 km from Paro town. Most of the days walk is a gradual climb through the pine forests. Along the trail, you pass some beautiful farm houses built in typical Bhutanese rural architect. The view of the Paro valley from the trail is also excellent. Overnight in camp. Alt. 3500m. Distance 14 km. Time 4-5 Hr.

Day - 4 Chonana - Jebkarpo
A superb trekking route. You trek uphill most of the day with plenty of rests on the way to the Chilila pass Alt. 3700m. The trail takes you through forest filled with primula, rhododendron and many other species of plants and trees. After crossing the pass, the trail goes along the ridge of Chilila with clear view of the Himalayan mountain ranges. Overnight in camp. Alt. 3500m. Distance 16 km. Time 5-6 Hr.

Day - 5 Jebkarpo - Lower Mingula
Today is a day to be up early. Early morning view from the camp site of Mount Chomolhari ( Divine Mountain of the Goddess ), Tserim Gang (Glacier of long life), and the famous mountain Jichu Drake are absolutely breathtaking. The trail follows the ridge above the Ha valley. Overnight in camp. Alt. 3850m. Distance 15 km. Time 5-6 Hr.

Day - 6 Lower Mingula - Thong
Another day with excellent views of mountains and valleys. On this route, you will see lots of yaks. Overnight in camp. Alt. 3950m. Distance 16 km. Time 5-6 Hr.

Day - 7 Thong - Thimphu
A short descend and you are in Paro valley. The trek ends at Drugyal Dzong and from there you drive to Paro. Lunch at Paro and drive on to Thimphu ( Capital ). Thimphu is 65 Km. from Paro and takes about 2 Hr. drive. Overnight in Hotel.

Day - 8 Thimphu - Sightseeing
A full day of sight seeing in Thimphu. You can visit the Tashichho Dzong, the main secretariat building where the office of the government Ministries, the office of the King and the Throne Room, and the office and the living quarters of the Monk Body and its Chief Abbot are housed.

Visit the Handicrafts Emporium where Bhutanese textiles and other arts are displayed and can be purchased.

Visit the Painting and Wood craft school where the traditional art and painting is kept alive.

Visit the Memorial Chorten ( a huge Stupa ) built in memory of the third King of Bhutan who reigned the Kingdom from 1952-1972.

Visit the National Library where ancient manuscripts are preserved.

Visit Simtokha Dzong ( 6 km from Thimphu ) the oldest Dzong in Bhutan built in 1629 AD. The Simtokha Dzong houses the largest monastic school in Bhutan.

Overnight in Hotel.

Day - 9 Thimphu - Punakha/Wangdiphodrang A full day excursion to Punakha, the former Capital of Bhutan ( 77 km ) and Wangdi Phodrang ( 16 km from Punakha ). You can visit the Dzongs in both the places as well as other interesting sites. Lunch at Punakha or Wangdi Phodrang and return to Thimphu.

Evening: Relax in Thimphu's modern health club and beauty parlor "Sakten Health Club and Salon." They offer sauna, steam, and gymnasium facilities, as well as full beauty treatments, including hair dressing, skin care (with pure herbal products) and body massage services. For our guests, the health club facilities (steam, sauna and gym) are free, while beauty services will be at concessional rates.

Day - 10 Thimphu - Paro
Morning : Take a leisurely walk in Thimphu town to do some shopping, visit the Post Office to do your philatelic purchases. If time permits, drive up to Dechencholing and see the Palace of the Queen Mother and down-valley view of the Thimphu valley and Tashichho Dzong.

Lunch at the Hotel.

After lunch, drive to Paro (65km) and takes about 2 hours to drive.

Overnight in Hotel.

Day - 11 Paro - Sightseeing
Drive up to Satsam Chorten, 10 km from Paro town and from there hike up to Taktsang Monastery. The name Taktsang means " Tiger’s Nest ". The Monastery is perched on a rocky ledge with a sheer drop of nearly 4000 ft. and overlooks the Paro valley and river. Taktsang is one of the most venerated pilgrim sites of the Himalayan world. It is believed that in the second half of the 8th century, Guru Padmasambhava, known as the second Buddha in Bhutan, meditated in the spot where the Monastery is situated having alighted there on the back of a tigress.

Picnic lunch at the Taktsang cafeteria. The round trip hike takes about 4 Hr.

Day - 12 Paro - International Airport
Seen off by representatives of our tour operators or your guide.


15 day "Chomolhari" Base Camp Trek

Day 1 Arrive Paro International Airport
During the flight to Paro, one will experience breath taking views of Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and other famous Himalayan peaks, including the sacred Chomolhari and Mount Jichu Drake in Bhutan. On arrival at Paro International Airport, you will be received by representatives of our tout operator, who will escort you to the Hotel where arrangements have been made for two nights halt.

Day 2 Paro - Sightseeing
Drive to Drugyel Dzong (a ruined fortress - 16 Kms. away from Paro Town). Although in ruins, this Dzong is of great historical importance. It was here that the Bhutanese finally defeated the invading Tibetans and drove them back. From here , the peak of Chomolhari "Mountain of the Goddess" (Alt. 7,329 m / 24,029 ft.). On the way back you visit a typical Bhutanese farmhouse. After lunch, at the hotel, take a leisurely stroll around the compound. Overnight in Hotel

Day 3 Paro - Shana
Distance 17 Kms. About 5 - 6 hours journey. Altitude of Shana 2,800 m.

Drive up to Drugyel Dzong where the road ends and the trek begins. The trail follows the river through beautiful meadows and paddy fields. The night’s camp is just beyond an army outpost.

Day 4 Shana - Soi Thangthangkha
The trail continues uphill through the river valley. The valley gradually narrows to a mere path which descends to a meadow where a camp will be set up.

Day 5 Soi Thangthangkha - Jangothang
Distance - 19 Kms. About 5 - 6 hours journey. Altitude of Jangothang 4040 m.

The trek starts up the Pa Chu. Cross an army outpost along the way. The valley begins to widen here with a spectacular view of high mountain ridges and snow-capped peaks. Yaks and the herders' winter homes become a regular feature of the landscape. Camp for the night beneath a ruined fortress at the base of Mt. Chomolhari.

Day 6 Jangothang - Halt
Trek up to Tosoh or hike around the area. There are good short hiking trails in three directions. Chomolhari and it subsidiary mountain chains lie directly west, Jichu Drake to the north and a number of unscaled peaks to the east. Overnight halt in camp

Day 7 Jangothang - Lingshi
Distance - 19 Kms. About 5 - 6 hours journey. Altitude of Lingshi 4150 m.

Trek through wide yak pastures and up and down passes. As you come down into the Lingshi basin, you get a wonderful view of Lingshi Dzong on a clear day. Tsarim Kang and its glaciers rise up at the north end of the valley. Night halt is a choice between a stone hut or the tent.

Day 8 Lingshi - Halt
A day excursion to Tsokha (Lake), which is the base camp for Jichu Drāke, can be organized. Blue sheep and musk deer are plentiful along the trek route. Distance 15 Kms. About 3 - 4 hours journey. Altitude of Tsokha 4500 m.

Day 9 Lingshi - Shodu
Distance - 22 Kms. About 7 - 8 hours journey. Altitude of Shodu 3963m.
The trail climbs up to the Yalila Pass at an altitude of 4820 m. From the pass, you can get an excellent view of Chomolhari, Tserim Gang and Masagang on a clear day. The trek from the pass to camp site at Shodu is steep down hill. Camp can be made in a stone shelter or in tent.

Day 10 Shodu - Barshong
Distance - 13 Kms. About 3 - 4 hours journey. Altitude of Barshong 3785m.
The trail follows the Thim - Chu river through rhododendron forests. Waterfalls can be seen along the way. The valley narrows till the path takes to the slopes and gradually ascends to reach the ruins of Barshong Dzong. Camp can made in stone shelter or tent.

Day 11 Barshong - Dolam Kencho
Distance - 11 Kms. About 3 - 4 hours journey. Altitude of Dolam Kencho 3628m.

The trail descends through thick rhododendron forest to meet the Thim-Chu and then ascends to pasture lands. Camp is in a meadow.

Day 12 Dolam Kencho - Thimphu Distance - 14 Kms. About 4 - 5 hours.
The trail continues through forested areas winding up and down and through a small pass. Langurs (monkeys) can be seen along the way. Overnight halt in Hotel.

Day 13 Thimphu - Day excursion to Punakha and Wangdi
Drive to Punakha and Wangdi for a day’s excursion. Visit Punakha Dzong. Packed lunch will be arranged. Return to Thimphu. Overnight halt in Hotel.

Day 14 Thimphu - Sightseeing
Visit Tashichho Dzong, the main Government Secretariat building, where the government ministries, the Office of His Majesty the King and the Throne Room , and the offices and living quarters of the monk body and the Chief Abbot are housed.

Explore the town, visit shops and the Handicrafts Emporium, where Bhutanese textiles and other handicrafts are available. Visit the workshop where the handicrafts are made.

Visit the painting and woodcraft schools where traditional painting and other crafts are still practiced.

Visit the National Library and see the ancient manuscripts preserved there.

Visit the Simtokha Dzong (6 Kms. from Thimphu), the oldest Dzong in Bhutan built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel in 1629 A..D. The Simtokha Dzong houses the largest monastic school in the country.

Evening: Relax in Thimphu's modern health club and beauty parlour "Sakten Health Club & Salon." Sakten offers sauna, steam and gymnasium facilities, as well as full beauty treatment, including hair dressing, skin care (pure herbal products) and body massage services.

22 day, Beautiful Laya/Gasa Trek

Day - 1 Arrive Paro by Druk-Air. Overnight in Hotel.

Day - 2 Morning : Visit Drugyal Dzong
(a ruined fortress - 16 Kms. away from Paro town).

From here, the peak of Chomolhari "Mountain of the goddess" can be seen on a clear day Alt. 7,329m/24,029ft.). On the way back you visit a typical Bhutanese farmhouse.

Visit the Rinchen Pong Dzong. This massive fortress is located on a small hill just above the Paro river (Pachu) in the Paro valley. You have to walk about 15 minutes by crossing an ancient wooden bridge built in typical Bhutanese architect. The Dzong houses the District Administration office and the District Monk Body. It was built in 1645 AD.

Lunch in the Hotel.

Day - 3 Trek begins: Paro - Shana
Drive up to Drugyal Dzong where the road ends and start the trek by following the river gently uphill through a narrowing valley of paddy fields. You will find plenty of traditional farm houses in a purely rural setting. The camp site is just beyond an army outpost. Alt. 2800m, Distance - 17 km and time 5-6 Hr.

Day - 4 Shana - Soe Thangthangkha
Continue uphill through the river valley which narrows and closes in after some distance. The trail then winds up and down along the drainage. Most of the trail actually is down hill after the initial climb. The camp site is located in a meadow with stone shelter. Alt. Approx. 3400m, distance 15 km, time 4-5 Hr.

Day - 5 Soe Thangthangkha - Jangothang
Walk up along the Pachu (Paro river), pass a small army outpost where the valley begins to widen again. You can now clearly view the high ridges and the snow capped mountains all around and also see the yaks and the yak herders winter homes. Camp beneath a ruined fortress at the base of the Jomulhari mountain. Alt. 4040m. , Distance 19 km and time 5-6 Hr.

Day - 6 Jangothang - Lingshi
Walk up toward the pass through a wide pasture land. Depending on the season you are there, you might find some yak herders in their camping tents along the way. As you come down after the pass to the Lingshi basin, you will see some beautiful views of the Lingshi Dzong and the valley and also Tserim Kang (mountain) and its descending glaciers at the north end of the valley. Camp in a stone shelter with a built-in fire pit or in the tent. Alt. 4150m. Distance 19 km. Time 5-6 Hr.

Day - 7 Lingshi - Chebisa
Today is the shortest walking day and you can really take it easy. On reaching the camp site at Chebisa, you can visit the village houses if you feel up to it. Alt. 3850m. Distance 12 km. Time 3-4 Hr.

Day - 8 Chebisa - Shomuthang
You walk through a wide pasture land towards Gobu-la ( pass). On the way, you will see few people herding the yaks. After crossing the Gobu -la ( Alt. 4350m ) descend down to the valley. The camp site is on a bench above a river which is a tributary of the Nochu river. Alt. 4260. Distance 17 km. Time 5-6 Hr.

Day - 9 Shomuthang - Robluthang
As the walk is little strenuous, it is advisable to start a little early. After crossing the Jerela (pass) Alt. 4600m you come down to Tsharijathang valley where you can normally see herds of Tarkins.

Camp at Tsharijathang. Alt.4390m. Distance 15 km. Time 6-7 Hr.

Day - 10 Robluthang - Lemithang
After crossing the Shingela pass, alt. 4900m., you come down and follow the valley. Lemithang is under the Laya District and you will see people dressed in typical Laya costume with long pointed bamboo hats on their head. Camp at Lemithang. Alt. 4140m. Distance 19 km. Time 6-7 Hr. If you have time, it would be advisable to spend a day here exploring the valley and meeting the people who have a different and unique culture.

Day - 11 Lemithang - Laya
Today, you walk all the way downhill along a narrow winding river valley. The trail leads you to the west side of Laya village. Camp site is on a high flat bench above the Laya village. Alt. 3850m. Distance 10 km. Time 3-4 Hr.

Day - 12 Halt in Laya for rest and to explore the Laya village.

Day - 13 Laya - Koena
The trail winds up and down along the river valley avoiding natural obstacles and affording breath-taking views of the crashing river, feeder streams and water falls. Camp. Alt. 3800m. Distance 19 km. Time 6-7 Hr.

Day - 14 Koena - Gasa
You cross the Babela pass, Alt.3740m., after which the trail is all the way down till you reach the camp site which is close to Gasa Dzong. Alt. 2900m. Distance 17 km. Time 6-7 Hr.

Day - 15 Gasa - Gasa Tsachu (hot spring)
After a late breakfast, trek to Gasa Tsachu. After lunch relax in the hot spring. The Gasa Tsachu is one of the most popular hot springs in Bhutan.

Camp at Gasa Tsachu.

Day - 16 Gasa Tsachu - Geon Damji
After a short climb, the trail winds through the rolling hills and passes through the pine and oak forests, villages and wheat fields. You will also see a beautiful view of the Gasa Dzong glued to the valley wall seeming to float in space. Camp. Alt. 2280m. Distance 21 km. Time 6-7 Hr.

Day - 17 Geon Damji - Tashithang
The trail descends from the high agricultural benches above the Mochu ( Chu means River ) into a lush semi-tropical gorge filled with banana trees, creepers and various tropical vegetation. You will also see monkeys and few other animals occasionally. Camp at Tashithang. Alt. 1700m. Distance 17 km. Time 6-7 Hr.

Day - 18 Tashithang - Khuruthang
After a short walk to the motor road, drive down to Punakha valley. Stop at Punakha and visit the Punakha Dzong. Punakha was the former capital of Bhutan. The Dzong lies between two rivers known as Phochu and Mochu which means " Male River and Female River ". It was built by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel the founder of Bhutan in 1637 AD and is one of the most important and historical Dzongs in Bhutan. In the Dzong are kept the sacred remains of Pema Lingpa and Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. The Dzong now houses the District Administration office and the winter residence of the state Monastic Body and its Chief Abbot. Lunch in Punakha. After lunch, drive to Thimphu . 77 km. Time approx. 3 Hr. Overnight in Hotel.

Day - 19 Sight seeing in Thimphu:

Day - 20 Drive to Dechencholing 6 km from Thimphu town to view the Queen Mother’s Palace from the outside. You can take pictures of the Palace and the Dechencholing Monastery from the outside only.

Drive back to Thimphu and take a leisurely stroll in the market.

After lunch, drive to Paro. 65 km. Time 2 Hr drive. Overnight in Hotel.

"Dagala," 13 Day Tour and Trek of the Thousand Lakes

Day - 5 The Trek Begins from Thimphu to Talekha
The trek starts from Simtokha Dzong where the ponies and camping crew members will be waiting with ponies. The trek trail leads through blue pine and evergreen forests till Talekha village which lies at an altitude of 2925m. The first two hours are difficult climb but the remaining two hours are pleasant walk through all blue pine forests. The Talekha village consists of five houses and a huge temple called Tale-Lhakhang. Overnight at Talekha campsite.

Day - 6 Talekha - Japhuna
The trek leads you through thick forests of blue pine and evergreen oak trees into soft pine and spruce forests for about two and half hours. For lunch halt at a yak camp site. Here the tree line ends. After lunch you cross a pass called Jelezela, Alt. 4000m. From the pass, one can have a breathtaking view of Thimphu valley and its surrounding mountain ridges. After crossing two ridges, you arrive at the second campsite, Japhuna, at Alt. 3800m.

Day - 7 Japhuna - Jaduna
The trail from Japhuna takes you up and down over several ridges for about four hours till you come across a small stream where you will find two trails which will lead you to the same destination. Along the route, there are many small lakes. After another hour and a half climb through rhododendron shrubs, you reach the third campsite which is also a yak camp. Alt. 4100m.

Day - 8 Jaduna - Labatama
There are two trails, one going on the left side of Aum Jomo ( highest peak in the Dagala range ), and the other onto the right side of Aum Jomo over the Jomigue pass and Setso Yumtso lakes. We follow the trail that goes on the right side of Aum Jomo and climb up to the Jomigue pass ( alt. 4460m ) after passing the Dungka Tso lake. From the pass, you can see beautiful views of the high mountains towards the northern Bhutan. After the pass, you descend for about 2 hrs. to reach Labatama yak camp by the side of the Yumtso lake where you camp for the night.

Day - 9 Labatama ( halt )
You can visit several lakes and enjoy a good fishing day in the lakes or go back to Jomigue pass and climb Aum Jomo till the summit (5050m) which will take about 5-6 hrs.

Day - 10 Labatama - Genekha
Today, you leave the lovely pasture of Labana and move out of Dagala range. The trail ascends gradually through beautiful landscape till you reach Pagalaptsa pass ( alt 4170m ), the highest point of the day.

From the pass, you have beautiful views of the Genekha village and a portion of the Paro valley. After the pass, you gradually climb down through thick Rhododendron shrubs and thick oak forest till you reach Genekha. Overnight in camp in Genekha.

Day - 11 Genekha - Paro
A short walk will bring you to the motor road where your transport will be waiting. Drive to Paro which is only 45 Kms and takes a little over an hour.

Overnight in hotel.

Day - 12 Day excursion to Taktsang Monastery.
Drive up to Satsam Chorten ( 10 Kms from Paro town ) and from there walk up to Taktsang Monastery. The name Taktsang means " Tiger’s Nest ". The Monastery is perched on a rocky ledge with a sheer drop of nearly 4000 ft. and overlooks the Paro river and the valley. It is believed that in the second half of the 8th century, Guru Padma Sambhava, known as the second Buddha in Bhutan, meditated in the spot where the Monastery is situated having alighted there on the back of a flying Tigress. The Monastery itself was built in 1684 AD. Picnic lunch at the Taktsang cafeteria. The round trip hike takes about 4 hrs.

Day - 13 Depart for Paro International Airport
